MANAGER Chris Powell praised his Charlton side’s incredible away record despite seeing them throwing away a 2-0 lead at Preston at the weekend.

The game at Deepdale concluded the away campaign for the season in which they have recorded an impressive 50 points, winning 15 games in the process.

Powell was disappointed with the way Saturday’s events unfolded but couldn’t hide his delight at the record on the road.

He said: “We’ve been very good away from home this season.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve done away from home, we’ve really attacked teams on their own patch and deservedly broken our away record for the football club.

“But I’d like us to round off the season with a home win next week and three points and breaking the 100 point barrier would be great in front of our fans as well.”

Saturday really was a game of two halves, Danny Haynes and Dany N’Guessan had the Addicks in complete control at the break before former Bolton full-back Nicky Hunt and veteran Graham Alexander levelled the scores for the Lilywhites late on.

Alexander was playing his last game at Deepdale before retirement having represented Preston more than 400 times in two spells.

And Powell admitted despite his disappointment at his side throwing away such a commanding lead, it was fitting that Alexander was the man to do so.

He explained: “We started extremely well in the first half and deserved our 2-0 lead at half-time.

“But really we took a step back in the second period, a number of the players hadn’t played for a while and maybe it showed.

“To be fair to Preston they came back into it with a deflected first goal and it gave them the impetus to push on.

“I suppose the script was written for Graham, a wonderful professional coming on in his last home game.

“I’ve been in that position myself, coming on and scoring and I suppose it was a fitting way for him. “Maybe he will be involved with Preston in the future with the coaching side, I know he’s into that and people like that shouldn’t be lost in the game.

“It was one of those days that I can just about stomach, but being 2-0 up and drawing 2-2 normally I wouldn’t be so happy but I suppose it was fitting for him.”

Charlton’s front line was led by Danny Haynes.

His involvement has been limited since joining in January due to a string of injury problems, but he bagged his first goal for the club which released him at the age 16 on Saturday and his manager was very pleased with the impact he has had since joining.

Powell said: “He’s got real pace. He hadn’t started a game for quite a while but he’s looked sharp in training and deservedly got his chance today and I thought he was a constant menace.

“He looked tired towards the end which was expected, but it’s good for him to open his account.

“Danny looks like he’s going to do something every time he has come on for us and it was a deserved goal for him today.”

The boss added: “He could have got more and I think the turning point in the game was his chance right on the stroke of half time, if he had taken that and we had gone in 3-0 up it could have made the result and the day sway in our favour, but it wasn’t to be.

“But I was very pleased with the two up top today (Haynes and N’Guessan) and the way we controlled the first half, but fair play to Preston, they came back into it in the second period.”
