Young swimmer close to nationals standard
4:07pm Tuesday 24th April 2012 in Sport
BISHOP Justus student Jessica Frankland swam her way to become top girl at Petts Wood Swimming Club.
She excelled in the recent Kent county championships, winning 10 medals, including a trio of championship titles in the 100m backstroke, 50m backstroke and 200m butterfly.
Currently her 100m backstroke time is only two seconds from the nationals qualifying time.
The secret of the 14-year-old’s success is down to her dedication, as she attends swimming training six times a week and completes land training twice a week.
She said: “I just want to keep improving, I want to get into the nationals.”
Bishop Justus head teacher Kathy Griffiths added: “The school has tried to be supportive of Jessica’s need to train hard.
“Knowing she is up at 5.45am to train before school, I’m very impressed with how well she copes with keeping up her studies, as well as participating in music extra-curricular groups at lunchtimes.
“We’re very proud of her efforts and achievements.”
