Redruth pile pressure on Combe
10:46am Tuesday 24th April 2012 in Sport
THREE tries were not enough to prevent a 21-17 defeat for Westcombe Park at Redruth and the Orpington side now stare relegation in the face.
Playing with the wind in the first half, Combe took almost half an hour before they were on the scoreboard, turning their greater share of possession into points.
Joe Simpson went over after a kick and chase out of defence before James Lindfield went over by the posts for a try converted by Simpson.
Earlier Combe had conceded a penalty, but 12-3 up at the break was never going to be enough.
Redruth hit back immediately on the restart with tries for Tom Duncan and Paul Thirlby, two more penalties for Brett Rule and a conversion.
Trailing 21-12 going into the last quarter, Combe pressed all the way.
In the final minutes, Luke Giles went over in the corner but Combe had run out of time and their only reward for a mighty team effort was a solitary bonus point.
