CHARLTON skipper Johnnie Jackson could not hide his delight after guiding his side to the League One title.

After Sheffield United were beaten at Milton Keynes Dons, victory for the Addicks confirmed their league crowning.

Jackson explained how the celebrations could really begin now after securing promotion and the title in a very successful week for the club.

He said: “We’re delighted and obviously really pleased it’s been a long tough season.

“Last week was a big relief to finally get over the line, and this week in training it has been all about carrying on and getting the job done, and hoping that results elsewhere went our way which they did.

“We knew that if that happened then we’d get our job done - we made hard work of it again but we’re delighted.

“Last weekend’s celebrations were probably a bit crazier because we had the relief of knowing that we are up, and then today was more of the same.”

The Addicks needed 97 points to secure the title, and Jackson was quick to praise to competitiveness of both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday who have pushed his side all the way.

But the skipper also highlighted the mental strength of his side, and their ability to hold both clubs off even if a small amount of doubt began to settle every so often.

Jackson added: “When you speak to people outside of football and they always say ‘you’re flying, you’re home’, but you always have that lingering doubt yourself when you’re in it.

“That week when we beat the Sheffield clubs, we can definitely look back at that as being significant because getting results against the teams around us gave us real belief, that then we could go on and do it.

“It was incredible for us to have 91 points and not have been promoted, but that’s a testament to them, they are two good sides that have really pushed us.

“But then again that’s credit to us because they’re two good sides who have pushed us all the way, and we’ve got promoted with three games to spare and won the league with two games to spare, so it’s a hell of an achievement.”

After beating both Steel City sides, the Addicks pulled away from the pack in January, but a sticky start to March saw Charlton’s lead cut.

But Jackson pointed out his team’s ability to win ugly and bounce back from disappointment as something that has made them stand out from the crowd in League One this season.

He commented: “After we lost two games at home against Colchester United and Notts County, we knuckled down again, and if you look at the games since then, we’ve conceded three goals - two of which were penalties.

“We’ve got back to basics when we’re defending, and ground out results, not necessarily with fantastic football but there’s more than one way to win a game.

“We had a patch when we were beating teams three or four most weeks but that was never going to last, and every week you’re coming up against teams who are all fighting for different things.

“We would have taken 46 one-nil's if need be, but we were always confident that we would get it done.”
