Millwall have revealed details of Saturday’s planned tribute to Lions legend Barry Kitchener at The Den.

Club chaplain Fr Owen Beament will conduct a short service of remembrance and celebration on the pitch at 1.50pm, featuring a brief address, readings, the football hymn Abide With Me and a photo-video montage from Kitch’s distinguished career.

Former players who have represented Millwall over the past five decades will be in attendance, as will members of the Kitchener family.

Supporters attending the game are invited to take their seats early to be part of the service, with gates opening for the Hull City fixture at 1.30pm.

Both before the game and at half-time there will be excerpts played from Jocelyn Pook’s football opera Ingerland, which features contributions from Millwall fans.

The pieces in question will be in keeping with the occasion and reflect what football and those who play the game mean to supporters.

Only previously performed at the Royal Opera House, it returns to the arena in which it was conceived.

Pitch-side presentations begin at 2.35pm, commencing with a presentation to young people having completed the Millwall leadership project.

They will receive level two certificates in community sports leadership from Lord Herman Ouseley, Ann Clayton and a Millwall player, representing Millwall for All.

This is part of Millwall’s annual community match celebrations, sponsored by the London Borough of Lewisham, which enables young people from schools and youth organisations to enjoy a match at The Den, many of them for the first time in their lives.

When the teams take the field at 2.55pm, in addition to the two mascots selected for the match, Millwall captain Paul Robinson will be accompanied by Halle McElroy, nine-year-old grand-daughter of Barry Kitchener.

Halle, and potentially another member of the Kitchener family, will take part in the Respect line-up.

As the players break from the line-up, Robinson will place a floral tribute behind the goal at the Cold Blow Lane End.

Just prior to kick-off, the referee will call players to the centre circle and commence a minute’s applause in memory of Barry Kitchener.
