CHRIS Powell believes two wins over the Easter weekend will put his Charlton side on the verge of a return to the Championship.

The 2-0 victory over Leyton Orient on Saturday moved the Addicks onto 85 points, seven short of the target the Valley boss set his team at the beginning of the season.

And Powell thinks wins against Oldham on Saturday and Walsall on Easter Monday would almost certainly secure promotion.

He said: “We are really happy to have our points tally at the moment but of course it is not enough, you have to get into the nineties if you want to be in the top two positions.

“We have got to go to Oldham and look for three points and whatever happens there we have got to do the same for the Walsall game.

“It has been proven over the years if you average two points a game, it gets you to 92 points and invariably that should get you in the top two positions.

“This is what we talked about in July.

“It has been a long season but we are now going into the last five weeks and with six games left, we just need to get as many points as we can.

“There are still a few points to play for but it is an outstanding points return by my team so far.”

Despite his praise, Powell is wary of the difficulties two matches in two days over Easter against the Latics and Saddlers could present for his side.

He said: “We have to make sure the players get the right recovery and rest leading up to the games because it is a tall order.

“These games take a lot out of you and we have just got to make sure the squad is alright and the changes, whether they are from the start or from the bench, have to be at the right times because within 48 hours they will be playing again.”

Nevertheless, the Charlton manager is pleased to have a large squad to choose from and is also happy at the impact Dany N’Guessan has made since his arrival on loan from Millwall.

Powell said: “Dany has been excellent and has really made a difference.

“In the first game against Yeovil he scored a goal and showed flashes of quality and on Saturday I felt his impact from the bench could be something that would change the game in our favour if it was really tight and I felt he made a terrific impact.”

“He has got two goals in three games and you can’t ask for any more than that.

“I’m very happy that I can call on players who have got fresh legs and good quality.

“At this stage of the season, tiredness can kick in with players and it is vital that you can bring in players that are hungry to get a chance and hungry to display their talents not only for me but for the supporters.

“That is why people like Darel Russell made a bit of a difference because he hadn’t been in and we have got players that are desperate for a chance, which is why sometimes you just have to freshen it up just to keep the team on their toes and give them a bit of a lift and impetus.”
