Big medals haul for Bexley Taekwondo aces

STUDENTS from Tan’gun Taekwondo academy in Bexley competed at the BTCB British national championships in Sheffield and returned home with five medals.

This was the first time Tan’gun has fielded an entire squad at such a prestigious competition, although the academy had previous success with individual entries.

Tan’gun academy entered eight players into the competition ranging in age from nine to 42, and all eight are now ranked in the top 10 in the country.

Abbie Newton put in an outstanding performance to win gold.

The 11-year-old is also member of the British Taekwondo team and has consistently ranked in the top six in the last three years.

Bertie Wright, aged nine, competed in a particularly large category, rising to the challenge with a solid performance to claim bronze.

Next on the mats was Thomas O’Neil, 21, who narrowly missed out on the top slot after settling for silver.

Despite carrying a knee injury, 15-year-old Lisa Majithia stunned judges with her performance, also securing silver.

O’Neil and Majithia went on to compete in the mixed pairs and in a nail-biting final claimed another set of silver medals.took bronze.

Academy chief instructor David Carmichael said: “What great weekend.

“Two bronzes, three silvers, one gold and five podium finishes is outstanding.

“I’m very proud of Team Tan’Gun.”
