DANNY Green was delighted to score the only goal of the game in Charlton’s success at Exeter.

Saturday’s result means the Addicks are now nine points clear at the top of the League One table and haven’t conceded a in more than seven hours of League One football.

The only goal of the game came 10 minutes into the second half through fortunate circumstances as Exeter keeper Artur Krysiak appeared to punch Green’s cross into his own net.

But the Addicks midfielder insists he will still be claiming it.

Green said: “It has hit the bar and then the goalkeeper has punched it when it’s over the line.

“I’ll take that.

“As the ball was played down the right, I could see that I had a bit of space.

“I’ve just tried to dink it into the box and it has hit the outside of my boot and just gone straight in.”

Exeter went into the encounter on the back of three consecutive clean sheets, so Green knew it was going to be a tight game.

He added: “Exeter were very compact in the midfield and up front they made it very tough for us.

“They played a 3-5-2 formation, so our only outlet was the full-backs.

“Chris Solly and Rhoys Wiggins did really well today and the only way we were going to score was by getting crosses into the box.

“It was difficult.

“When we attacked they became five at the back.

“The left wing back would become a left back and the right wing back would become the right back and then we’ve still got three centre halves to beat as well.

“They’re a good team they pass the ball around well.”

Match winner Green was also quick to praise the efforts of his own back four, who kept their 12th league clean sheet of the season.

He added: “Teams are finding it hard to break us down because our back four has been terrific.

“Matty Taylor is a no nonsense defender, he’ll put the ball into row Z and then get his shape back.

“Michael Morrison is more agile.

“He can head it and can dribble it out of defence, he’s got great feet as well.

“It’s a joy playing with Chris Solly, he’s such a good player.

“He’s really good going forward and is really difficult to get past going backwards as well.

“Rhoys Wiggins on the left is almost like a left winger, he’s been superb all season as well.”
