CHRIS Powell has confirmed Charlton are keen to sign Barnsley striker Danny Haynes.

Haynes has fallen down the pecking order at Oakwell recently, although there is no shortage of admirers for the 23-year-old, with south London rivals Millwall also keen to get him on board.

But Charlton manager Powell, who conceded a deal will either happen very quickly or maybe not at all, is impressed by Haynes’ pace and is hoping an agreement can be struck after letting Jason Euell go out on loan to AFC Wimbledon earlier this week.

The Addicks boss said: “He is a player that has come to our attention but I’m led to believe there is a number of clubs that have enquired about him, so it is more a case of what Barnsley do, what they decide and obviously what the player decides.

“It is tentative from us but if anything happens, we will have to wait and see.

“I’m not in a position to say (if Charlton have made a cash bid) actually because I’ve just come from training.

“I don’t personally do that side of things, I couldn’t really tell you if we have or haven’t.

“We’ve made enquiries and it hasn’t really progressed from there, that’s all I can say at the moment.

“Danny Haynes is a good player and one I feel has got pace.

“He can play up top, he has played his career up top and on the right wing but I see him more as a striker.

“We don’t have any real out and out pace in the side. We are a good side, we play a lot of good football with our movement and passing ability, but most teams have out and out pace in the side.

“It is just a different option for us and it is always good to have different options within your squad and he comes into that category.”

Powell added: “It is a long way off whether we can get him.

“If we do, it may move quickly. If not, he may go elsewhere.

“That is just where we are with him at the moment.”

And revealingly, when asked if there will be many signings this month, Powell replied: “Not really, it is more a case where I’ve done business where one player has gone in and one has gone out with regards to Paul Benson and Leon Clarke.

“That may happen if we bring in Danny Haynes with Jason Euell going out, we will have to wait and see.

“It is more a case of getting the right balance in my squad, having different options within the squad in the front area and elsewhere.”

Powell also explained why he feels the decision to allow Euell to move across south London on a temporary basis will suit all parties.

The manager said: “I see it as putting out a good professional who has done well here on and off the training field and in the side.

“He has scored a couple of goals for us, he has been very good for us and he has a desire to play, which I think is fantastic for a player at his stage of his career.

“I think it is a good move for him, it is good for Wimbledon, it is good for us and ticks all the boxes for everyone because Wimbledon see it as a hero returning for them.

“It will give them a lift, he will get games and minutes, which he hasn’t had a lot of, and also it keeps him fit so when a month is up he will either come back with us or he may say he is enjoying it at Wimbledon, who knows.

“But initially it is a good move for everyone.”

Powell also denied there were any concrete bids on the table for other fringe members of his squad.

He added: “Not at the moment, it is tentative enquiries but nothing confirmed as yet, so it is more a case iof whether these clubs follow up their initial interest.

“It happens a lot and you get lots of calls but then you don’t get follow ups.

“You don’t really do anything until they kind of say ‘we are in a position to do it’.

“Jason has gone and we may possibly see one or two more, but at the moment it is just J.”
