RHOYS Wiggins admits things could have been worse for Charlton after the League One leaders dropped points for the second consecutive weekend.

Chris Powell’s side went into Saturday’s Valley clash with mid-table Oldham as strong odds-on favourites to make a maximum return after being held 1-1 at Walsall seven days earlier.

Things appeared to be going to plan once Darel Russell headed the hosts in front on the hour.

However, a late equaliser from Filipe Morais forced the Addicks to settle for a share of the spoils yet again, although it wasn’t all doom and gloom after Huddersfield’s late equaliser at Hillsborough ensured Sheffield Wednesday also dropped points.

Wiggins said: “To come from a winning situation with only a point is a bit disappointing, but we know we’ve had a good start and we can't win every game.

“We’re still unbeaten in I don't know how many games now, so we’re just looking to progress and get as many points as we can.

“We felt comfortable and as a back four we felt quite solid.

“But they had a similar chance just before the equaliser and the second time we couldn’t get anyone in front of it.

“We’ll just have to look at it and learn from it, but it is very disappointing.”

He added: “The Sheffield Wednesday v Huddersfield score sounded alright and we couldn’t have asked for a better result in that one.

“We’ve got games coming quick and fast now, so it’s important to have that gap over the other teams over Christmas.

“We’re still disappointed when we think of the amount of points we would have if we had also won last weekend and this weekend, but to still have a five point lead is something we’re happy with.”

Oldham were booed off the pitch by Charlton supporters at the final whistle after frustrating their hosts for long periods.

But Wiggins refused to criticise the Latics for their tactics and pointed out if Charlton had been a bit more assured after getting their noses in front, things would have turned out very differently.

He explained: “Their keeper seemed to take his time, as did the rest of them with their throw-ins, but you can’t blame them for that.

“If we had kept the clean sheet, we would have won the game.

“We’ve just got to keep going.

“The expectations come with good performances, so I think we’ve put that on ourselves a little bit.

“But we know we can’t get carried away, we need to take each game as it comes.”

Wiggins added: “The gaffer said at half-time we need to up the tempo in the second half and get into them.

“I felt we did until our goal came and once we got that goal, we didn’t really settle the game down.

“It was still fast, we kept losing the ball and it turned into a scrap, which we didn’t want.

“We watched videos of them on Friday and we knew they played exactly how Paul Dickov used to play.

“We knew they’d come at us and that we’d have to up the tempo, but when we did that and got the goal, we should have then kept the ball at the back and been a bit more patient.”
