PAUL Benson’s move to Bradford City has collapsed after the Bantams tried to get the striker at a knockdown price.

Reports suggested Benson had failed a medical with the League Two side, although News Shopper understands the deal actually broke down because Bradford weren’t prepared to pay the full fee once the deal became permanent in January.

The supposed medical problem relates to an operation Benson had while still a player at Dagenham & Redbridge which left the 32-year-old with a lack of cartilage in his knee.

However, it didn’t prevent then Addicks boss Phil Parkinson signing him for Charlton in August 2010 and at no point since then has Benson been unavailable for selection due to any knee injuries flaring up as a result of his operation at the Daggers.

Benson could still potentially seal a loan move to another club today but Charlton are not happy with how the Bradford deal has broken down.

News Shopper also understands negotiations are at an advanced stage to bring in one new player to The Valley before the loan window closes.

The likely candidate is a midfielder but Hull’s James Harper, who has been linked with Charlton elsewhere, now looks set to stay at the KC Stadium.
