MILLWALL legend Tony Cascarino launched Welling United’s football in the community scheme trust on Saturday.

The former Lions striker was at Park View Road on Saturday along with officials from the Conference to hand over a donation of £12,000 awarded because of the scheme’s track record of working with the community.

Welling United’s football in the community scheme trust has been relaunched as a non profit charity and replaces the previous Wings community scheme to continue and build on the five years of hard work already carried out.

Community officer Jim Dean said: “This shows Welling United’s committment towards helping local children find pathways into sport through its community program.

“Since the conception of our scheme, we now have more than 250 members playing sport at the weekends.

“Coupled with our healthy eating initiatives within the borough’s schools, we feel we are having a positive effect to the well being of our future generations.

“Without this grant we would find it difficult to reach as many children as we would like, so with the help of the Conference, in partnership with the Premier League and Football League, schemes such as ours can only thrive.”

Sue O’Brien from the Conference added: “We at the Conference are delighted to give this grant to the Welling United community trust.

“It shows recognition of the dedication and hard work shown in developing the scheme and their work in schools and the community.

“In addtion to the football coaching and healthy lifestyle programmes to more than 800 children every week, we feel it is a credit to themselves and Welling United.”
