CHARLTON keeper Ben Hamer had arguably his best game in an Addicks shirt in the 4-0 win over Carlisle United on Saturday and believes the game was over at 3-0.

The summer signing claimed an assist, saved a penalty and kept a clean sheet against the Cumbrians, helping Chris Powell’s men stay top of the table.

“I wasn’t happy with my warm-up as I was having trouble with the sun, but I was happy with the assist,” explained Hamer.

“We got the opener, then I caught the ball from a free-kick and saw Bradley Wright-Phillips on the counter and managed to feed him in.

“I was more pleased with the assist, but I didn't think it was a great penalty, I just managed to chuck a left hand out and managed to block it.

“All round we needed the clean sheet, as we had been conceding some bad goals lately with two penalties and two deflections, so to concede another penalty would have been bad.

“We don’t want to concede penalties and it’s four so far.

“It’s not a great stat but obviously if I’m there to keep them out, I’m happy.

“I’d saved a few at Brentford but the cards are in the penalty-taker’s hands.

“You’re just there and you have a guess by reading his body language and go the way you think he’s going to go.”

Yann Kermorgant scored either side of Bradley Wright-Phillips’ second goal in the first period as the Addicks cruised into the break 3-0 up and their afternoon was made easier after Matty Robson’s sending off on the stroke of half-time.

Hamer said: “We showed we can play some good football and even at 3-0, even with them without 11 men, the game was buried.

“It was ours to lose really.

“The boys are happy and we’ve only lost one in 14, but that’s what we expect of ourselves. We’ve got high standards in the changing room and we want to do big things this year.

“We’re not getting carried away but it’s another game ticked off and hopefully we can keep ticking them off on the way.

“I won promotion at Brentford in League Two, so I know what's all about and I need to bring that experience with me here to get us up this year.”

And the 23-year-old paid tribute to his defence, singling out Rhoys Wiggins in particular for a fine game down the left-hand side.

“We’re very strong and we’ve got a solid base back there with two very good centre-halves and our full-backs are very attacking, so they kick on which allows us the freedom to attack," said the former Reading man.

“Rhoys was causing a lot of problems to their right-back and he couldn’t deal with him at times.

“At one point his blood was probably twisted because he had him inside out.”
