Millwall captain Paul Robinson praised the spirit of his side after they held rivals West Ham to a goalless draw at The Den on Saturday.
Both sides should have got on the scoreboard, with Millwall’s Liam Trotter wasting a good one-on-one opportunity before Henri Lansbury hit the bar and David Bentley shot wide for West Ham.
However, the visitors had netted nine goals in their three away games before their trip to The Den and defender Robinson was delighted to keep the Hammers at bay in his first ever game against Millwall’s fierce rivals.
“That was a real adrenalin buzz,” he told News Shopper.
“The atmosphere was fantastic. We were disappointed not to win but a draw was probably a fair result.
“We defended well, worked hard, limited them to minimal chances and deserved the point we got out of the game.
“They’re a side that have scored a lot of goals and been quite potent going forward so it was a positive result.”
On paper West Ham’s starting XI, including several England internationals, should have been too strong for their hosts, but Robinson believes the Lions sum is greater than their parts.
“We’ve always been the underdog because we haven’t got many household names in our side,” he said.
“But what gets us through is team spirit and hard work and I think you saw an example of that today against a side with a lot of Premier League experience.
“Our spirit counts for a lot.”
The Lions have now failed to score in their last four league games but Robinson is confident it is only a matter of time before the Millwall forwards start finding the net.
“We created chances of our own and it’s just a matter of sticking one in and the confidence will come from that,” he said.
“I think we’re on the right road.”
Millwall fans will be hoping their side can end their goal-scoring drought at Molineux on Tuesday night when they visit Premier League Wolves in the Carling Cup third round.
“We’re looking forward to the Wolves game,” added the skipper.
“It will be good to test ourselves against a Premier League side and learn from them as well.”
