ORPINGTON Road Runners defended their Kent county marathon championship crown with a 1-2-3 finish at Margate.

Last year Orpington had five runners in the top 10 as they won the county title, but things were even better 12 months later.

Jason Cherriman, who was third last year, lead the field home with a winning time of 2hr47m54s to become individual Kent county champion.

Orpington team-mates Steve Nimmo (2hr50m13s) was runner-up with Ian Hailes not far behind (3hr01m23s).

Although Hailes finished fourth overall, because the county championship is incorporated in the Kent coastal marathon not all entrants are eligible for the county championships.

Hailes’ time was the third best of those runners eligible, meaning Orpington produced a 1-2-3 in the county championships and defended the Kent county title.

There was also success for the club in the women's race, with Suzy Yates finishing third overall and second in the county championships in a new personal best time of 3hr22m41s.

Orpington also had a 1-2-3 in the county championship veterans' (over 40) category, where Nimmo and Hailes were joined by Gavin Kitchingham, who finished 10th overall in 3hr16m53s.
