CHRIS Powell expects loan deals for some of the fringe players at Charlton to be completed as early as this week.

With eighteen new signings over a busy first summer in charge at The Valley and a host of young professionals eager to cut their teeth, first team football has thus far been at a premium for some of the squad.

But after confirming the Addicks have received several declarations of interest from clubs looking to borrow his reserve players, Powell looks to begin doing loan business over the next few days.

He said after the 2-0 win against Exeter: "We've had one or two enquiries.

"Whether or not teams follow them up is a different story, but I'm half-expecting some phone calls on Monday to follow up these initial enquiries.

"A few of our young players need to get out and get some game time to develop, but we'll wait and see.

"But as far as loaning players in, I've brought quite a few players in already and I think it's wise that I just use that market if and when I need it."

On the subject of potential stipulations to any loan deal, Powell promised to be understanding to both his players and the interested clubs.

He explained: "I think it'd be very unfair for me to say to any manager that they have to play.

"I know a lot of Premier League managers do that but I just want them to go out and get experience.

"It has to be right for us, and they can only go for 93 days maximum as an emergency loan but we've got one or two young players who definitely need that at this stage in their careers.

"We'll see how it goes, but I'll speak to whatever manager at whichever club our players go to and I'll make sure they are well looked after.

"If they have to come back to us during the loan period on non-matchdays to train then we'll do that as well."

With Carling Cup competition against Preston in SE7 on Tuesday, it's fair to say very few fringe players will want to leave the club before then.

The Charlton chief made wholesale changes for the first round against Reading and was rewarded with an excellent performance from his second-choice side, something he admits may be done again this time around.

He said: "I have to look after my squad and keep an eye on any fringe players to make sure they get games, so there'll be one or two changes for Preston.

"I'll look at it and assess the squad over Sunday and come Monday morning, we'll see what eleven I decide to put out.

"Obviously I don't want Phil Brown to know exactly what I'm doing but I've got confidence in my squad anyway, so if I do make a lot of changes I'm confident the boys will give their all for us.

"A lot of people said it was brave, especially if Reading came out with their first team because that would have been tough.

"They were more experienced than us on the night, but what I liked about the players that night was they took on board everything I said to them the day before, and just before the game, and they played well.

"I'd like to see us repeat that against Preston, and I'd like to see us have a cup run because then it gives them games.

"The winner of this game goes on to play at Southampton, we'll see what we do on Tuesday but I'm confident whoever goes out there will perform and give their all for the shirt."
