CHARLTON have beaten off competition from Bristol City and Notts County to land highly-rated young striker Michael Smith from Darlington.

Smith has attracted interest from several clubs during the summer and spent time with Premier League Stoke City on trial in pre-season.

Championship Bristol City and League One rivals Notts County were both desperate to land Smith, but the 19-year-old is on a train to London this morning and is expected to complete his Valley switch later today.

Meanwhile, News Shopper understands Charlton have cooled their interest in Barnet’s Mark Marshall after the winger was strongly linked with a move south of the river to SE7.

But there is a chance of a deal being completed for Spanish 24-year-old defender José Manuel Rojas Olmedo from Club Deportivo San Roque de Lepe.

Paul Benson remains the player most likely to leave The Valley on transfer deadline day.

A host of clubs are interested in securing his services, with new Bradford boss Phil Parkinson keen to link up again with the striker he signed for Charlton 12 months ago.
