The South London & Kent Pool Alliance held two more competitions this month with Tony Gear of Rack Pack winning the Sudden Death Singles event.

This tournament is exactly what it says on the tin – a quick fire, single frame shootout where anyone has a chance and there were some interesting match ups in the first round.

Former team mates from Brockleians and Brockleians Choppers were drawn together with Andre Cox victorious over Luke Pritchard and Rod Altes triumphing over Steve Krishnan.

Fox under the Hill’s Richard Merricks beat Pankaj Chilkoti but team mate Chris Gaunt wasn’t as successful against Tony Gear.

Rileys Rovers players Grant Bedford and Kevin England went out to Adam Everitt and Naftali Ayieko respectively but the tie of the round had to be former winner George Covington against James Sheed with Covington winning through to the next round.

If the first round had some interesting pairings then the second round had some amazing ones.

After battling past Sheed in the first round, Covington faced the unbeaten in the league so far this season, Rob Chalmers in the second with the latter winning through.

The only second round pairing that both had a bye in the first round was Leather Bottle’s Jason Brunton against Allan Formosa from the Pickwick with Formosa potting the black required to send him into the quarter final.

Ryan Francis and Richard Merricks, both playing for teams recently relegated from the Elite League met with Francis tasting victory, while Merricks team mate Kevin McNelly also went out to Tony Gear.

Matt Flockhart was unfortunate not to beat in form Rod Altes and Alex Thompson overcame Adam Everitt.

The final two games of the round were an international affair with each of the players having represented their countries in international competitions.

England player Adam Coppen lost out to West Indian Andre Cox but England Youth international Jordan O’Connor made amends by knocking out Kenyan Naftali Ayieko to set up a quarter final against Cox.

The quarter final line up was extremely hard to call with arguably the strongest set of players we’ve seen in the competition at this stage.

O’Connor was the victor in the international match against Cox, who will meet Chalmers in the semi after he beat Altes.

In the other half of the draw we had a youthful semi final as 18 year old Ryan Francis beat Alex Thompson and 22 year old Tony Gear beat Allan Formosa.

The youthful semi saw Gear triumph over Francis and he will face an even more youthful O’Connor who overcame Chalmers.

Both Gear and O’Connor are previous winners of this competition, O’Connor in Winter 09/10 season and Gear last season and it was Gear who was victorious to become the first player to win the competition two seasons in a row.
