JASON Euell may be one step closer to re-signing with old club Charlton after making a substitute appearance in their friendly against Woking.

The 34-year-old scored 34 times in 139 appearances for the Addicks between 2001 and 2006, but now finds himself without a club after spells at Middlesborough, Southampton, Blackpool and Doncaster.

His former team-mate and current Charlton manager Chris Powell allowed him to train with the club to help his chances of finding new employment and a handful of minor injuries within the squad led to the striker being named as a substitute at the Kingfield.

Euell told News Shopper earlier in the summer he would love the opportunity to return to The Valley full-time and admitted on Saturday things have been working out great for him since then.

He said: “It feels good to be back and I’m happy Chris and the club have allowed me to come back to train and get fit.

“It felt good to pull the Charlton shirt back on and to just play some football again.

“I’ve been training with the club for the past three weeks and Chris asked me if I fancied a run-out today.

“This helped towards the fitness levels I’ve been building up over the weeks I’ve had here and now it is about game time and building from there, so I’m happy Chris allowed me to do it.”

Euell was also full of praise for the new-look Addicks squad in place under Powell, adding: “The team spirit has been great since I’ve been back here.

“They’ve welcomed me with open arms and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. They’re a good bunch, a younger bunch, and I think it’s good to be amongst that.

“It has been a good experience for me over the last few weeks and I've enjoyed it.”

On where his future may lie, however, the Jamaican international was giving little away.

“I’ve spoken with a few clubs about the possibility of signing,” he admitted.

“It’s a weird feeling being free to speak to these clubs when normally you’re under contract.

“People have been interested in where I’m going to be playing this season.

“I finished a loan at Doncaster and the fans were excited to try and get me back there, as were AFC Wimbledon now they’ve been promoted, and Charlton as well.

“Now I’m on Facebook and Twitter I can update people on what my plans have been over the summer and what I’ve been up to.

“You look to try and play at the highest level possible for as long as you can and you’ve got to look at it from this position where you’re out of contract and you get various options.”

But while Euell would like to remain in the Championship, he refused to rule out stepping down the divisions if it felt right.

He said: “You’ve got to pick the right option and if playing in League One is the right choice for myself and my family, then I’ll do that.

“It’s funny to come in today as a trialist player and to get the reception I did.

“I think that is sometimes what football is about and fans don’t forget about certain players who’ve done well for them.

“It’s nice that they've come out here and supported me but it’s also important they support the guys who are here full-time and I think they did that.”
