CHARLTON defender Michael Morrison says team bonding and dressing room banter has been a highlight during pre-season so far.

The summer signing from Sheffield Wednesday believes the club will be in top six by Christmas but stressed it’s important to take each game as it comes.

“I think as a team we’ve got to be up there in the top six for the whole time, if not the top two,” said the defender.

“As long as we’re in the top six by Christmas time, I think it sets us up for a good push from January onwards.

“I don’t think you can set too many targets.

“We’re just looking at Bournemouth and it’s up to us to go and win that game and then the next game.

“I think at the moment the true picture is to get promotion, but the focus is on the first game of the season and take it in slow steps.”

Morrison admitted the players took on a singing competition in Spain last week, with every player stepping up to the microphone.

“It’s quite lively in the dressing room and over in Spain we had a few little sing-songs, it was a good laugh,” he added.

“There’s been some good banter about the place.

“We’re all fairly mid-20s in age group, so there’s quite a good atmosphere around the place.

“Danny Green won, so there’s a few hidden talents there for him.

“I had a little sing-song, well I tried. I did Stand By Me by Ben E. King, it wasn’t the best.

“I knew the words, unlike Danny Hollands, who got his words wrong with the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.”

Charlton shared a 1-1 draw at Aldershot last night and despite taking the lead through Paul Benson, Morrison was disappointed with the goal conceded.

“We worked hard over in Spain and it was good to get in 90 minutes,” he said.

“I don’t think it went to plan in the first half, but in the second we re-grouped and I thought we looked good.

“They scored a sloppy goal which we'll work on and make sure we're a bit tighter.”

The defender gave away a first-half penalty after a late run from an Aldershot player, but is keen to state the players are still getting to know each other.

“I’d kept the line and it was just a late run which caught us out and I think me and Matt Taylor were wondering who was going to run back and track him,” said Morrison.

“But he just come across me and I was trying to keep out of the way, it was just one of those things.

“We’re all getting to know each other and getting the cobwebs out, so I wouldn’t take too much from it as there’s still a long way until the season starts.”

And on his partnership with Taylor, Morrison believes communication is a big factor and there’s still a lot more to come from the pair.

“I think we can complement each other well,” he said.

“Matt's a big lad, he can head the ball, talks well and I think throughout the game we both talked well, especially with Rob Elliot in goal as well.

“I think communication is a big part of it at the back and it’s only going to get better.”

Morrison admitted he didn’t know much about former Addick Jose Semedo, who joined his former club Sheffield Wednesday recently.

“I think they’ve got a lot of work to do over there,” admitted the powerhouse.

“They haven’t bought too many players in from what I’ve gathered and got a small squad.

“I’m sure he's a hard working guy, but I’ve not really seen him play so good luck to him.”
