CARL Jenkinson has finally completed his drawn-out move from Charlton to Premiership giants Arsenal.

The highly-rated defender has been a long-term target for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger but the transfer has dragged on over the close season as the two clubs thrashed out a financial compensation package.

Charlton this morning confirmed Arsenal fan Jenkinson had officially joined the north Londoners, although the final fee will remain undisclosed.

Jenkinson, 19, played nine times for Charlton but is already a Finland U21 international.

“I will always be in Charlton’s debt for the training they have given me since a young age,” he said.

“I’m grateful to the club’s academy and all the coaching staff, so I’m delighted the two clubs have come to an agreement.

“I hope supporters will understand why I can’t turn down such an opportunity, but Charlton will always have a place in my heart.”

Addicks manager Chris Powell believes the youngster can go on to match what some other high-profile former Charlton stars have done at the top level.

He said: “Carl’s another one who has come from our youth programme and if he follows in the footsteps of the likes of Scott Parker and Jonjo Shelvey, it will be great for him.

“We will always look back at his time with us with fondness because he's been with us since he was an U9 player and we hope he brings all the values that he has learned here to Arsenal.

“I’m sure under the guidance of Arsene and his team, he could blossom into a wonderful player.”
