BRADLEY Wright-Phillips believes Charlton are destined for promotion next season if the club can recruit more players in the summer.

Charlton are set for a third successive season in English football's third tier, although Wright-Phillips thinks promotion is long overdue.

The former Manchester City player joined the Addicks from Plymouth midway through the season but hopes Chris Powell has assembled a squad capable of a promotion challenge in August.

He said: “We’re only a few players away and ideally I’d like another striker because it will bring more goals.

“As long as we can get a good squad from the beginning of the season, we will definitely be up there.

“I came in January, which wasn’t ideal.

“There’s not many bigger clubs than Charlton, even in the Championship.

“I won’t fear any teams next season.

“We’ve got to get our act together sooner or later, so hopefully it will happen next year.”

Like everyone else, Wright-Phillips is unaware which players will leave The Valley if there is a clear out.

However, he admits he has liked working with loanee Nathan Eccleston.

Wright-Phillips explained: “I have only heard about contract talks with the younger players, I don’t really know what is happening with the senior players.

“Hopefully the majority of players stay and we can bring in some more additions as well.

“Nathan is a quality player and very good to play with.

“He's from Liverpool and if you’re at Liverpool at his age, then you know he has got to be good."

Wright-Phillips failed to find the target in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Hartlepool, prolonging his barren spell in front of goal to eight games.

But he is determined to start the new campaign with all guns blazing.

He said: “I’ve been playing better but not getting the goals.

“It doesn't matter now because the season is over, so I'll save them for next season.

"I haven’t lived and played football in London since I was 15, so I’m just enjoying that at the moment. I loved the first half of the season at Plymouth.

“It is sad what has happened to them but I was happy to get a move to a bigger club and I thought we were going to get promoted. It’s hard to enjoy good performances and goals if you don't achieve what you should have, which was promotion.”

Wright-Phillips also confirmed he will not need an operation on his knee but is looking forward to recuperating over the summer.

He added: “I can’t wait to have a beer, guilt free.

“I heard from somewhere else I’m having an operation but if you have an operation for the type of tendinitis injury I've got, then it can make it worse.

“I’ve been working with the physio to strengthen my quad and my knee is fine, I haven’t missed a game.”
