CHARLTON boss Chris Powell remains unsure how many of the current squad will remain at The Valley next season.

The Addicks continued their recent run of improved performances, despite falling to a late goal at home to promotion-chasing Huddersfield on Saturday.

And with many players coming to the end of their contracts, Powell knows he has some big decisions on his hands in the coming weeks.

He said: “I’ve got to weigh up my squad with regards to next year, as well as the budget.

“Obviously I’m in discussions with my coaching staff, the owner and the chief executive about how we move forward and I’ll endeavour to make sure we bring in the right sort of players to this football club.

“We are rebuilding and it will be small steps because it has been small steps on the pitch in the way I want us to play but we have to do it on a regular basis next season over 46 games.

“I need to find the right characters to help get the right squad together and make sure we’re really going for it next year.

“It’s a case of me deciding who’ll be coming forward with us and who won’t and I’ve got to make sure I get that right and the players who stay here or don’t stay are the right decisions.

“We’ve been through a lot as a club but we’ve got to look forward now and that’s what I’m aiming to do.”

Despite another loss making it just one win in 15 games for the Addicks, the final whistle provoked large waves of applause and positive reaction from the home fans.

Powell was encouraged by the feedback for his players, insisting the supporters respected the effort and attacking style the home team put forth.

He explained: “I think the fans here would have appreciated what the side have done over 90 minutes.

“Without a doubt, they would have seen a team working hard, trying to go forward and being positive in their play.

“We tried to pass the ball, which was good, and I think we did it a lot today.

“The fans want us to win, they want us to get results, so they would have appreciated when teams like ours today against Huddersfield go forward and look to get goals and points.

“It’s tough because confidence plays a big part and games such as Oldham and Leyton Orient have helped.

“You have to play under pressure at times and be brave and they did that today against a side in Huddersfield who haven’t lost in a long time.

“I do want the players to pass and use the ball well but also have a cutting edge to them and I think that’s the difference.

“You can keep possession but if you’re not getting crosses in and making their defenders work then you’re not going anywhere, but we did that today.”
