WELLING United U11s won a dramatic penalty shootout 9-8 against AFC Allstars to win the London Cup for the second consecutive year.

The boys won the competition, also known as the Sidney Smith Cup, last season as an U10s outfit and were determined to defend their crown against fellow Selkent League side AFC Allstars.

Welling took the lead in the first half with a goal from captain Tom Hever but despite their domination in the opening 45 minutes, they were unable to extend the advantage.

The Wings paid the price when Allstars came out fighting in the second half and equalised to set up extra-time.

No further goals were scored in open play so the game went to penalties.

After the initial set of five spot kicks apiece, the game was evenly poised still at 4-4, ensuring the match would be decided by sudden death.

Welling kept their nerve and finally emerged 9-8 victors, a result which delighted manager Dave Shaw and coach John Cotton.

Shaw said: “They have worked extremely hard this season and achieved our main objective, which was to win the London Cup again.

“We are both very proud of them all and feel privileged to run such a great team, with supportive parents who make it worthwhile too.”
