CHARLTON skipper Christian Dailly has no intention of retiring from football any time soon and hopes to remain at The Valley beyond the current campaign.

At 37 and with his contract up at the end of the season, Dailly's future would appear to be up in the air.

But the former Scotland captain, who negotiates his own deals without the help of an agent, plans to remain in SE7 actively playing for as long as possible.

He explained after last night’s 1-1 draw with Southampton: “I just want to keep playing.

“I’m not even thinking about managing, I’m not interested in it for the time being.

“The boys think I've got five years left in me. I reckon I can play for another 10.

“As long as you can still run fast, you can still play.”

On his current contract situation, Dailly added: “My contract is up at the end of the season. I’d love to stay but I’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

“There's 15 or 16 players with contracts up in the summer and the way football goes now, the clubs approach people at the end of the season.

“I don't think it affects the side, it's just the normal thing and the way football is now.

“Teams need to see what league they're in and what the financial situation is, especially somewhere like Charlton.”

The Addicks' Player of the Year for 2009/10 doesn't believe the amount of uncertainty surrounding who will be at the club next year is the prime cause of the side’s current poor run, however.

Charlton have taken just two points from a possible 27, something Dailly feels is down to a lack of confidence more than anything.

“It’s not so much motivating the players during a spell like this, but everybody's lacking a little confidence because results have kicked in as they have,” he said.

“The key is to mentally free yourself up enough to allow yourself to just go out there and play but at times we’ve found that a bit tough.

“Saturday was no different.

“It was a little bit tense and we probably wanted to win too much, almost.

“We ended up playing the same way as Dagenham and they're better at that than we are, so we lost the game and deservedly so.

“Tonight, against probably one of the top sides in the league, it was a little bit different and it was definitely a more even game and more like what we can be like.

“The blend of the team seemed to work pretty well and generally I feel quite positive after tonight."”

Dailly, who made 11 appearances for Southampton on loan from West Ham in 2007, hopes the positive performance and result against his former club will help settle a side that has changed erratically since Chris Powell took over in January.

He added: “Constant changes were almost inevitable really when Chris came in because, as the new boss, he needs to look at everybody and it’s up to the players out there to do their job.

“But he needs to see everybody playing all sorts of positions and our recent run of results is one of the things that can happen when you do that.

“We’d love to play the same team week in, week out but the people who play have got to do their job in order to do that and I think that’s the situation Chris has been looking for.”
