CHARLTON’s winless run continued with a 2-1 defeat away to relegation-threatened Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday.

Goals from Jon Nurse and Danny Green, who were both also on the scoresheet at The Valley in a 2-2 draw earlier this season, sealed a vital three points for a Dagenham.

And John Still’s men were good value for their win: after surviving a good stream of Charlton play in the first half, the home side soon took over the game in every department.

Nurse broke the deadlock on 33 minutes after Green’s cross was poorly cleared into his unmarked path and the Barbados international finished well past Ross Worner in goal.

Although the back-and-forth nature of the first half indicated the fixture was far from settled, the Daggers set about putting things beyond doubt from the minute the game restarted.

Indeed, the Addicks were second to every ball and with 55 minutes played, Green made matters worse for Powell’s men by firing into the roof of the net.

Despite over half an hour remaining in the game, it was quite the comfortable climax for Dagenham until halfway through four minutes of added time.

Bradley Wright-Phillips exposed tiring legs at the back to squeeze in a low cross for Frank Nouble to convert from extremely close range, his first for Charlton since arriving on loan last week from West Ham.

Powell’s post match assessment was frank, admitting: "It's a tough period for everyone at the moment.

"Any game that you lose is tough. But we were well supported here today, and I thought we coped with the initial barrage that you get here.

"Dagenham are a very determined team which plays to a set pattern and we stood up to that. We had some chances, but no clear-cut ones, and then they scored a decent goal, so we were on the back foot.

"Obviously, when we are in a period with low confidence, then things will eat away at the players, and really then they were on the back foot for the majority of the game.

"I think confidence is a fragile thing and obviously it's a mental thing now.

"It's not physical because we competed today against a team that is very honest and very hard-working and we matched them for that. Now we are looking for the quality to come through.

"I suppose when you are going OK, you try things and you do things off the cuff and they come off. It's just little things now that maybe they are a bit afraid to try and they are naturally thinking 'well, it's not going to be our day'.

"That is a mental issue and that is tough. In a run like this now, and with the supporters voicing their opinions now - which is fine, and is something they will always do - then they have got to cope with that."
