CHRIS Powell still hopes to strengthen his Charlton squad in the loan market despite missing out on several targets to Championship clubs.

Powell had hoped to add at least two more arrivals but has encountered stiff competition from other clubs in stronger positions than the League One side.

However, the Valley legend-turned-chief remains quietly confident of getting the right men on board and won’t be rushed into drastic measures by the Addicks’ two defeats on the bounce last week.

Powell said of the loan hunt: “I think it’s always been the case, whatever the result today.

“Adding to the squad is something we’ve been looking at so if the right player can join us and improve the side then we’ll do that.

“Our squad is okay as it is. We have a couple of injuries but I think if they clear up, and we manage to acquire one or two players in the loan market, then we’ll be fine.

“We’ve made some phone calls over the last couple of weeks and lost out on some players to Championship clubs but that’s just what happens in this game.

“Given the choice between Championship and League One, primarily most players will go to the Championship.”

Powell could be forced to act sooner rather than later should Charlton’s injury list continue to mount but this particular problem could be remedied by the club's youth ranks.

Right-back Carl Jenkinson impressed in place of an injured Simon Francis on Saturday and Powell believes he could help provide the squad depth needed for the busy fixture schedule.

He explained: “It’s going to be hectic for the majority of teams.

“We’ve got to make sure we’re fully recovered from our excursions.

“There’ll be some chances for the younger members of our squad, such as Carl Jenkinson today.

“He came in and acquitted himself very well in a big game. He’s another youngster we can say will have a future with us.”

Powell commented on the side's injuries: “Simon took a knock at Hartlepool and his back wasn’t 100 per cent.

“He’s also fractured a bone in his hand so he didn’t make it today.

“Bessone will be out for a few weeks yet as the hamstring is an area you’ve just got to take time with.”
