CHARLTON manager Chris Powell is delighted to have kept up his 100 per cent record as boss but is hoping his side can start playing better from the opening minute.

The Addicks ran out 3-2 winners over a Peterborough side who looked well in control during the first half, which saw them go a goal to the good at the break.

“In the first half they dominated us, no doubt about it,” admitted Powell.

“Their strongest part of the team is Craig Mackail-Smith, Tomlin and Boyd.

“They were exceptional in the first half and I hold my hands up, they passed the ball better and really, when we were 1-0 down, it could have been more.

“I said to the boys at half time, ‘you're still in the game, absolutely 100 per cent’, and we needed to up our urgency and pass the ball better.

“I’m not happy about the marking for Mackail-Smith’s goal but it is three points, another win, four out of four and it’s a wonderful feeling.”

Liverpool loanee Nathan Eccleston was handed his first start and he took his chance well with bags of energy and creating the second goal for the Addicks.

Powell said: “Nathan was outstanding for the second goal with some great one-touch play and a great cross.

“The only thing he didn’t get was a goal.”

Powell insists he's still getting to know all the players but believes they all have a part to play, whether they are in the matchday squad or not.

One man who was out of the squad last week at Yeovil was striker Pawel Abbott.

But the target man made a huge difference to Charlton’s balance of play going forward in the second half after he came on at the break and a fine performance was capped by Abbott when he scored the home side’s third goal.

“We’ve got to call on everyone to play their part in the run-in.

“Abbott showed he’s got a part to play and I’m pleased for him.”

At the final whistle, there was a real sense of unity between the new manager and his backroom staff, and Powell is hoping to restore the pride which was once felt at The Valley when he was a player.

He added: “It’s important to show everyone when we score a goal, everyone celebrates.

“I want them to enjoy it, I want the players to care about one another and they’ve shown that.

“They’ve been great around the training ground since I’ve turned up and I want that shown from the staff as well.

“Everyone plays their part whether they’re a player, manager, supporter or chef, it doesn’t matter.

“I want them all to enjoy coming in and play their part.”

Federico Bessone was restored to the starting line-up against Posh, but the defender went off clutching his hamstring in the second half and was replaced by Matt Fry.

Powell said: “That's why I wanted to keep Matt Fry.

“I told him ‘you're going to play games’ and he came on and made a contribution.

“For Federico it looks like his hamstring is troubling him again, so we'll have to wait and see.”
