BRADLEY Wright-Phillips expects to continue his goal scoring form after netting the winner in his first game for Charlton shirt against Colchester last night.

The joint top marksman in League One added to his 13 goals for previous club Plymouth with a cracking overhead volley to hand Chris Powell’s men a second straight home victory.

And despite his surprise at being named in the Addicks’ starting XI on his debut, Wright-Phillips feels he can match his form for Argyle in the first half of the season.

He said: “I’m delighted to score on my debut. I said before that I wasn’t really happy with my overall performance but I got the goal and the team did well, especially in the second half, and got three points.

“I just tried to repay the manager and the team as they’ve been good to me and had a lot of faith to play me.

“The team won their last game, so I was expecting to be on the bench.

“Hopefully I’ve paid the gaffer back for playing me tonight and I'll go on from here.”

Wright-Phillips was on Plymouth’s books when they visited The Valley 10 days ago for Powell’s first official game in charge.

But Pilgrims manager Peter Reid omitted the predatory forward from his squad, claiming in the post-match press conference his star striker was injured.

Although it turns out Wright-Phillips did indeed miss out on one potential transfer after failing a medical, he insists he will be fit enough to contribute at Charlton.

He explained: “I failed a medical at Reading as they just didn't want to take a risk.

“After that I heard from Charlton and some other clubs, including from the Championship, but I couldn't really turn Charlton down.

“I got tired towards the end, I think that’s why I came off, but I feel good and my knee feels good. I think I'm going to need a few more games but I should be alright."

Despite the interest from the Championship, Wright-Phillips is confident he has made the right decision coming back to his home area and remaining in the division where his scoring record speaks for itself.

“I trained with Charlton for the first time last week, Tuesday maybe, after I heard about their interest a few days before that,” he explained.

“The manager told me what he’d expect from me and what the club’s about.

“It suited me and I'm here now.

“Coming from Greenwich definitely played a part, too.

“Although I'm from Greenwich, I support Arsenal but I've come to Charlton games when I was younger.

“It’s my local club and I’m happy to be here.”
