CHARLTON’S new boss says he will not be making signings just for the sake of it this month.

Chris Powell has been linked with several names since taking over in SE7 earlier this week, with Plymouth’s Bradley Wright-Phillips and Hereford’s highly-rated striker Mathieu Manset two individuals mentioned elsewhere as likely targets.

However, the Addicks chief refused to discuss names today and is determined to assess what he has first, although he also admitted it is highly likely there will be fresh additions before the window closes.

Powell said: “I’ve been inundated with players but my first port of call are the players here.

“People will naturally look to link players to us and no matter who you are going to mention to me now, I will say to you I’m looking at our players first.

“When I’m ready about what we need to compliment our players and our squad then I will go ahead with that.

“People at the moment will always link players to us because of me just coming in.

“That is the nature of the game but if the right player is right for this club, then we’ve got to get back to that.

“Not only must they be right as a player but as a man to join Charlton in our rebuilding.”

He added: “I think this team are capable of getting out of this division but any manager will tell you they want options in the squad and I think we need a few more of those.

“There are some good young players here who maybe haven’t played as yet.

“I’ve looked at one or two of those already and thought if it boiled down to it, I would play them and throw them in.

“I just think we do need more options all over the squad and all over the team which will just help improve us and move us along.

“But there are some good players here and they need to flourish and hopefully I can give them the environment just to express themselves.”

And Powell is warning other clubs he will not pay over the odds for any new signings just because Charlton now have cash to spend following the takeover.

He said: “I speak to the owners daily and I think there will be money available but it is more a case of us being quite clever and a bit creative because the club has struggled and spent a lot of money in the last year or two.

“Just because we’ve got a takeover, we don’t want everyone thinking we are just going to splash and go crazy.

“It would be wrong of us to do that.

“If the right player is affordable for us we will do it. I think that is wise and right.”
