IN the first of his new weekly online columns, DANIEL GRIGG gives his verdict on who should take charge of the Addicks.

DENNIS Wise appears to be the favourite to replace Phil Parkinson as Charlton’s new manager.

However, many Addicks supporters are deeply sceptical about Wise’s credentials and it isn’t just because of his Millwall connections.

Wise has received harsh criticism in the past from managerial greats like Bobby Robson for failing to turn up enough and crucially lacking the eye to spot a good player.

The ability to work wonders in the transfer market is a massive part of the job for all lower league managers and costly mistakes like Ignacio Gonzalez at Newcastle don‘t suggest this is Wise‘s strong point.

Many people’s ideal is a young but highly respected manager who can form a good team unit with limited resources, a good example of which is Crystal Palace being linked with Eddie Howe, having worked miracles at Bournemouth.

Chris Hughton is highly rated, although Roy Keane’s change of fortunes from promotion success with Sunderland to subsequent underachievement at Ipswich may come as a warning against Hughton’s appointment.

Former Chelsea assistant managers Steve Clarke and Ray Wilkins have both been mentioned and had some support.

Wilkins may prove to be a useful assistant manager to Wise, just as he was at Millwall, although Charlton is a bit of a step down from being assistant to Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea.

Few candidates have any Charlton history, but of course Alan Curbishley is mentioned - a great Charlton manager but probably a case to back up the old adage of ‘never go back’.

Chris Powell is also an outside shout for the assistant manager’s job now he’s a qualified coach, having been popular with the fans at the Valley.

It looks unlikely one of the favourites will get it and my own preferred choice Gustavo Poyet would have to leave a Brighton side on the verge of promotion, plus the compensation fee would cost Charlton a substantial amount.

Of those I could see joining, I’d say Clarke would be the best choice because his Chelsea and West Ham background should put him in a good position to bring in some talented players on loan.

Having looked at the current squad, they are exactly what is needed if Charlton want promotion this season.

Clarke may lack managerial experience but so did former Chelsea employee and current Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers before he was given the chance to prove his tactical and coaching abilities to impressive effect.
