CHARLTON goalkeeper Rob Elliot believes his new yellow jersey has provided a ‘psychological’ boost to help him keep three straight clean sheets for the Addicks.

Elliot raised eyebrows from the beginning of the season when he chose the fetching pink top of the two selections offered.

But the homegrown keeper chose to make the switch to the more conservative yellow number after picking the ball out of the net far more than he’d have hoped as of late.

On the switch and whether it has actually made a difference, Elliot explained: “Wearing the pink jersey I let in seven goals in two games, so I changed to the yellow.

“It doesn’t really mean anything but it’s sometimes psychological and gives you the feeling of a fresh start.

“The kit man offers me the choice at the start of the season between the two kits and they’re both nice kits but it’s the keeper in them who does the business.

“The pink’s not going to come back for a while, it’ll have to do a lot to get back in – the yellow’s doing well for me so I’ll stick with that.”

The latest clean sheet, away at Barnet in the first round of the FA Cup, came at the price of an extra fixture in an already busy schedule in ten days at The Valley.

But Elliot insists the extra game will only make the Reds stronger following a slow start to the season with a relatively new squad.

He said: “Some people see the extra game as a bad thing, but our team is a group of players who’ve just come together this season and are gelling really well so the more games we play, the better for fitness and gelling even more.

“We’ve got good balance, good rhythm and fantastic players who aren’t even starting – when you’ve got Kyel Reid and Pawel Abbott, Jon Fortune and everyone else on the bench, you’re in a really strong position.”

With his shut-out streak nearing the 300-minute mark, Elliot is confident he can keep his goal nice and clean for some time to come.

He added: “Clean sheets don’t always mean you’ve had a good performance but it’s been great that we’ve had three clean sheets and three good performances.

“We’re really happy and as the gaffer said, we came here and created a lot of chances and could have scored three or four, but we kept a clean sheet and we haven’t lost so we’re very confident heading into the replay that we can get into the next round.”
