PAUL Benson bagged his second and third goals in a Charlton shirt as the impressive Addicks contested an entertaining draw at Plymouth Argyle.

Both sides netted once in each half, with the Reds coming from behind twice from Bradley Wright-Phillips and Yala Bolasie despite bossing the majority of the game.

But despite being the better side for large portions, manager Phil Parkinson and the 567 fans who made the long old poke down to Paul Whitehouse’s adopted second club will have been pleased to leave Home Park with a point, Benson’s second coming in the final minute of regular time.

Parky elected to make one change and was forced into another from the side who started at stadium:mk on Tuesday.

With Simon Francis’ girlfriend giving birth overnight, captain Christian Dailly moved over to cover on the right in just his second game back from a fractured eye socket Meanwhile, midweek goalscorer Pawel Abbott came in for Lee Martin to partner Benson in a more traditional 4-4-2.

However, there was very little change from the Dons game as far as its opening minutes as a long throw into the box was back-headed by Doherty straight into the path of Wright-Phillips to fire home into the bottom corner for his fifth of the season.

And it could have been two with just seven minutes on the clock, but for Rob Elliot’s great parry to deny Craig Noone, while Arnason went wide on 13 with a 20-yard volley.

A lapse between Pilgrims keeper Romain Larrieu and his back line allowed the Addicks their best chance of the early stages, although Kyel Reid’s slicing ball to Scott Wagstaff was pulled well wide of goal by the club’s top scorer.

The hosts looked far from comfortable defending their lead, though Noone’s corner forced Elliot into a fantastic reflex block to deny Steve Maclean at point blank range.

And almost immediately, Elliot punted the ball up to the other end where a persistent Benson chased harder and more determined than his markers, managing to slide it past Larrieu in off the post for the leveller.

Arnason’s long throws were causing all sorts of trouble for the Addicks’ makeshift backline, and 16 year old Jack Stephens headed just over from one with 5 minutes remaining until the break.

Play was stopped for a short while after centre-back Reda Johnson landed awkwardly attacking a set play in the Reds’ penalty area – Johnson appeared to damage his shoulder and required a stretcher job, being replaced by Tottenham loanee Dean Parrett.

Unfortunately for the visitors, they picked up a casualty of their own in the form of in-form Waggy who limped throughout the final stages of the first period and was replaced by Lee Martin at the interval.

Nonetheless, they managed to begin the restart well with some of their best passing play to that point, though a good Martin delivery from the corner was headed in the wrong direction by Doherty, taking it away from the incoming Jackson.

The away side continued to put the struggling Bottle Greens under heavy pressure, with Abbott looping an effort over, Arnason almost converting Martin’s cross past his own keeper and the ex-Argyle man then forcing Larrieu to tip around his post.

Although the Addicks were now firmly on top, the replacement of Maclean with Bolasie provided somewhat of a spark for Plymouth and Bolasie had his first shot on goal within moments of his arrival, firing directly at Elliot.

A series of bookings for the home side followed as they looked to foul Charlton out of contention in the latter stages, though from the latter of the cautions Reid was able to lash in a free-kick from the right only for Fortune to glance it just inches ahead of a pair of team-mates.

It was to the surprise of many at Home Park that Argyle were the side to find the next goal – and what appeared for a while to be the winner.

After weathering the red storm, what appeared to be a foul on a Charlton player was waved away by Christopher Sarginson and Bolasie made hay, launching an unstoppable drive from 20 yards past Elliot.

For a few minutes, Parky’s men played with their heads somewhat understandably down as Argyle enquired about a possible third.

But the final goal of the game came once again from the former Dagenham hitman, who was set up perfectly by a headed center from an advanced Doherty who’d otherwise had a torrid game for the Addicks.

And with an argument to be made for both a point gained and two dropped, the Charlton fanbase could at least rejoice in the fact that the lost art of strikers scoring goals had returned to their team.
