Bexley bowls contest proves a big hit

LAURA Kuschell won the ladies’ singles title at the Bexley borough finals with a display of bowling of the highest quality.

The 18-year-old Helio Mirror bowler led from the start and demolished Sidcup’s Trish Mistretta 21-2.

Meanwhile, the men’s singles final was an altogether closer encounter with Blackheath & Greenwich’s Pat Putnam beating Tony Williams (Bexleyheath & Barnehurst) 21-17.

Williams led in the early stages but Putnam drew level at 13-13 and then took the lead at 18-13.

His opponent fought back to 18-17 but ultimately could not overhaul Williams.

Despite scoring a maximum count of eight on the 19th end to lead 16-15, B&G’s Putnam and Neil Hornsby still lost the men’s pairs event to Sidcup’s Albert Johnson and Bob Flint jnr by dropping two singles and going down 17-16.

In the men’s double rink B&G beat Bexleyheath & Barnehurst 55-36, while Danson Park defeated Kings 44-35 in the ladies’ double rink.

The ladies’ pairs went to S Jacobs and J King (Cray Valley) winning 21-19 against B James & J Cain (Halls).

Blackheath & Greenwich had both finalists in the mixed pairs with Jocelyn Rodin and Putnam beating Christine Hewison and Harry Gregory 18-14.

Hewison and Gregory took a 7-0 lead, which was steadily cut back to 13-13 at 10 ends.

The advantage changed hands over the second half but Rodin and Putnam won the last three ends to secure the victory.

Horton Kirby’s P Wickham, A Hicks & A Money dropped seven shots on the first end of the mixed triples and then finished by scoring six shots on the last end to beat D King, K King and P Staines (Hesketh Park) 21-20.

The Horton Kirby team trailed throughout the match, only snatching the win when Money’s last bowl of the game rolled into the head to count as sixth shot.

B&G also won the men’s triples coming from two shots down to beat VCD 19-12.

Holding their own up to the seventh end with the scores tied at 5-5, VCD then won five of the next six ends to lead 12-7.

B&G then got back on track and finished the last three ends with scores of 4-3-2.

Sidcup won the men’s fours by beating VCD 18-11, while Horton Kirby overcame Bexleyheath & Barnehurst 29-11 in the mixed fours.

The ladies’ triples went to Horton Kirby with a 14-10 triumph over Kings, while in the ladies’ fours Sidcup beat Cray Cottage with a three on the last end with the scores tied at 16 all.

Mayor of Bexley Val Clarke, who received a cheque for her charity from the organisers, presented the trophies and prizes to the winners.
