CHARLTON’S latest front man Pawel Abbott admitted moving to The Valley from Oldham was too good an opportunity to turn down.

The half-Polish striker, 28, made the switch last month for a fee of just £20,000 as part of manager Phil Parkinson’s rebuilding crusade at SE7 following mass departures over the summer.

And after a year at Boundary Park, where he finished the last campaign as the club’s top scorer with 13 goals, Abbott is relishing the chance to perform in the capital.

He explained: “To be honest, Charlton is a bigger club. If you look at the teams outside the Premiership you don’t get many bigger teams than Charlton.

“I spoke to the manager and I think my game suits where he wants me to play as well so it was a no-brainer, really.

“As soon as you hear Charlton want you there’s not much that will stop you.”

Abbott made his Addicks debut in the 1-0 win at home to Bournemouth, before scoring his first goals for the club with a brace in the 4-3 Carling Cup defeat at Shrewsbury.

But the towering target man isn’t keen to rest on his laurels and has his eyes on building his goal haul in the league.

He said: “I’m pleased with my two goals at Shrewsbury, I’m happy to get off the mark but I want to get off the mark in the league now.

“Obviously as a striker you want to be scoring goals all the time. I wish I could have scored (against Leyton Orient) as well but the circumstances were a bit different.”

Indeed, Abbott ran himself ragged to support his team-mates after skipper Christian Dailly’s red card at Leyton Orient, and his team efforts paid off as the Reds ran out 3-1 winners against all odds.

The victory creates an interesting scenario next weekend when Abbott plays against his former club for the first time as the two sides now top League One with two wins from two.

On the Latics, he said: “It’s come quickly but it’ll be nice to see the boys again.

“Although they had an average season last year, before that they have always been a half-decent team so I think they’ll be strong opposition for next week.”
