DARTFORD: Princes Park football ground in England 2018 World Cup bid

Princes Park might be the venue for World Cup Princes Park might be the venue for World Cup

AN AWARD-winning north Kent stadium has been included in London’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

Princes Park stadium in Dartford has been put forward as a potential venue for visiting national football teams to use for public training sessions before matches.

The borough has also been suggested as the site of a private training camp and for hotel accommodation for the tournament, meaning one of the competing team's would be based completely in Dartford.

Dartford Council's sport and project delivery officer Stephen Jefferson said: “All of us remember how Euro ‘96 electrified the nation, and the buzz around the 2012 Olympics is already reaching fever pitch.

"If England is fortunate enough to host in 2018, Dartford will guarantee a warm welcome to players.”

Mr Jefferson would do well to discuss the eye-sore also known as Dartford Town Centre with the council before inviting international guests over to bask in our wonderous architecture!

Unless of course the nation of Kasahkstan make it to the 2018 world cup and camp up in Dartford, in which it would be like a home from home!

Of all the great stadiums on England...... Dartford. Looks like they are not really bothered about the bid then.

I see there were a classically constructive and mutually supportive couple of comments to start this off then.

DrDBexley - I reckon this is an opportunity then, don't you? Another reason to improve things in Dartford

porkpie - they're talking about public training sessions - not the final!

Most likely thing to scupper the bid is negative cynical attitudes.

Go oooon! Smile a bit.

My point exactly - opportunity to sort the place out!

The place is like Saturday morning, downtown Bagdhad!!

Plus there's the issue of congestion, given the Dartford crossing; would the teams actually make it to Princess Park if they travel @ 5pm on Friday afternoon!

My major bone of contention though is that the council should be doing these things for good of the town and the people of Dartford, not some internation football training session!

I guess it's all part of a chain, web, circle, interaction, erm... thing. It's probably the outcome that matters.

I'm as happy as a happy thingy. I still stand by my post, I just think that there are better places. Cause they're not going to play the final there, we have Wembley for that. £80 million worth of rubbish. I was there last Saturday. What a waste of money. We had the chance to build something really great. I have been in better looking car parks. This country pour so much money into these thing eg the Dome/ Wembley / 2012. Most the money ends up in the pockets of board members. Seb Cole has earned a right tidy little packet out of the 2012 debacle. He has shares and sits on boards of various companies that have been give contracts.

I take your point on the big stadia. I do wish more was done to involve the punters in their design, along the way.

Having said that, I assume you've been to Princes Park? I took my kids to Dartford's 'homecoming' game, to witness their bit of local history, and was really struck by how it punches above its weight for the level of investment and the size of the town.

Yes I was there for a pre season friendly 2009 with Millwall. I also have friends who are local supporters and have played there for their team. It is nice. I just think if we are showing off to the world then lets make it really good. World cup 2010 are using ten grounds to play the group games. OK Wembley for the final that's set. maybe one other London ground for the group games. That still leaves 3 or 4 good grounds to show off.

Why would they pick a ground in Dartford? There are so many more better grounds around the UK to play. They cant have all the games in London as this isnt fair to the rest of the UK. There loads of decent grounds "up north" that I can think of, Manchester United, Manchester City, Newcastle, Sunderland, Leeds, Liverpool plus many more. WHY DARTFORD!!!

It's for a training ground - public practice - like where England are in S.Africa now. So we might host Cameroon at Rowhill Grange or something - then they train at Dartford. Play vs the Darts... etc. Kindof grassroots stuff.

Dr Bexley/ Porkpies comments miss the point completely! They use all sorts of venues for training base camps (accomodating 32 teams, with a disproportionate no. of games being played in London and teams moving about makes it necessary to look outside the top two divisions!).
Dartford town centre is totally unremarkable (to a german or american) and you're suggesting it's almost certain to prove an international embarassment. The facilities are good, the location is ideal logistically, have a day off gents- it's not as if they're including Ferrier astros in the bid!

I haven't missed the point at all. There are still better places in the top 3 divisions. Good Point DrDBexley M25 / Dartford crossing and the term " location is ideal logistically " Do not go together. I suggest f_harper you should take a week off and stay off the drink and pills.

Yes but teams won't arrange staying in central london hotels in order to avoid the traffic, noise and distraction. Most will probably plot up in semi-rural places like hertfordshire or perhaps even KENT, and avoid travelling back to the hotel at rush hour. They won't even have to cross the QE2 apart from for games. It's an unorthodox but justifiable choice- pipe down please

Talking of pipes you should stay off it. Reckon you have shares in Dartford.

I won't 'hold my breath' waiting to receive your polythene bag via the newsshopper comments section (if you excuse the pun). But I will profusely apologise to you for being pleased a small local club might get a chance to host an international side for a few weeks and expressing that sentiment.

Apology definitely not accepted !! I'm very pleased too! Some people find it hard to 'wake up and smell the coffee'....bet your life they would be delighted if a new bingo hall appeared. I can't bear negative attitudes and its sad that no-one (other than a few) can't see the positive in this.

Just wondering why - when this could be a constructive and interesting debate about a) the merits of Dartford as a w.Cup training venue and b) the redevelopment of Dartford town centre - there's anything worth getting abusive about.

Thank goodness it's not about anything controversial. ;0)

The word that is **** out is not abusive. It's a word that is also used to block water like what beavers build. Grimbold I was enjoying the debate and opinions from yourself. However it only takes one noise little onik who's mother didn't love enough to ruin the party.
