PHIL Parkinson kept a lid on any celebrations from the Charlton camp after the Addicks defeated Leeds 1-0 to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive.

Despite the hard-fought and dramatic late win against their promotion rivals at The Valley, Parkinson was keen to prevent his players from making any noises about the run-in or the possibilities should Charlton still have to settle for the play-offs.

And the Addicks boss himself remained equivocal after the final whistle, pointing out that a possible rematch with the Whites in the play-offs made it absolutely necessary that his side do not toot their own horns prematurely.

He explained: “I said before that psychologically this is a big game because we could meet Leeds again and it might be at Wembley.

“There’s no jumping up and down for joy in the dressing room, we’ve got to be gracious in victory today because Leeds could be a team we meet again.

“Leeds are in a better position than we are and if you said to me would I swap positions with Leeds for next week’s game, I would.”

Of Charlton’s chances, Parky admitted: “It’d be massive for this club to get promoted. Obviously the board tell me how important it is but I can only do my job to the best of my ability.

“You can’t put added pressure on yourself because of the financial implications at the club. But we’re working extremely hard and if we achieve promotion then we’ll be having one big party at The Valley.

“This club, if we did get back up, like with Leeds could take off again. It’s so important and we gave ourselves a good chance either next week or going into the play-offs and we’ve got a lot of belief that we can do it.”

However, Parkinson did concede that should Charlton finish in the play-offs zone, 3rd or 4th place could be a crucial achievement as the highest-placed two teams of the four would play the second leg of the semi-final on their home turf.

He added: “If you look at the atmosphere today, teams won’t relish coming here so we would like to have the second leg at home – if that’s the case, great but if not then we’ll deal with the other scenario.”
