JOSE Semedo could cap what he regards as his career-best season by earning promotion with Charlton as well as the club’s player of the year award.

The midfield enforcer, 25, has remained largely injury-free this term to help the Addicks challenge for immediate promotion back to the Championship with a string of key performances in the side’s engine room.

And the former Portugese youth international hopes that his and the squad’s hard work pays off, though he was quick to play down his chances of being voted Charlton’s premier performer of the season in the annual poll.

He explained: “Last year I was injured from January until the end of the season but this year I came back fit to play and I think it’s been my best season.

“Winning Player of the Year would be fantastic but I think with the players we’ve got anyone can win. I’ll be happy if it’s me but I’ll be happy if it’s anyone else because we are a team.

“If we win our battles in the midfield then we can win games so I will always try to do my job along with my partner and when we do that we have more chances to win.

“I hope we get promotion and if we do I’ll enjoy my holiday after that.”

Semedo also expressed his gratitude to the thousands of Addicks supporters who have taken him into their hearts, confirming that he is extremely happy to remain at The Valley.

He said: “It feels very good to hear the fans sing my name and I try to give back to them with my work for the team.

“This is my third season here and I feel at home. I love the fans and I love everyone at this club. I miss Portugal and I miss my family but not Portugese football – I’m very happy in England and I’m very happy at Charlton.”

And of course, mention of the crowd singing his name begged the question: are the famous lyrics true? Does he indeed ‘hate’ Millwall?

“Definitely!”, a laughing Semedo answered. “I have to say yes.”
