CRAY dominated play for large periods of the game at Maidstone, but they had to settle for a point after unluckily conceding a late equaliser.

The two Kent rivals are both hovering just above the drop zone, and a point each will not have done much to ease either side's relegation worries.

After a shaky start, Cray settled down and showed every sign that they could play the home side off the park.

The Wands were well worth their opening goal on 25 minutes, after fouls on Leigh Bremner and Tommy Tyne in quick succession.

From the second free-kick, Jamie Wood set up George Porter whose shot flew past Alan Walker.

Cray 'keeper Tony Kessell had to make a point-blank save from Alex Thiesse immediately afterwards, but it was Cray who stayed on top, with Walker making saves from Porter and Lewis Wood.

Maidstone began the second half with some pressure on the Cray goal, but Cray stayed solid at the back and started to look increasingly dangerous from breakaways.

Cray's failure to bury the game cost them dearly when Stones' skipper Peter Hawkins equalised in the 84th minute.

The goal arrived while the Wands were temporarily disorganised after an injury to central defender John Guest.
