ROBBIE Elliot has been backed by Phil Parkinson to put last week’s howler at Southend quickly behind him.

The keeper saw Matthew Paterson’s first half shot squirm under his body at Roots Hall last week to give Southend a shock lead.

Bhe Addicks fought back to clinch a 2-1 victory thanks to Kyel Reid’s last-gasp winner, a goal which went a long way to sparing Elliot’s blushes.

Parkinson said: “Robbie will be disappointed with that goal, but I think over the course of the season he has been an exceptionally good goalkeeper.

“I said to him after the game it was another character test for him because ultimately he is getting more experienced.

“He is still a relatively inexperienced goalkeeper, but he came through it and pulled off some good saves in the second half.

“I said to the boys afterwards I’m glad we had pulled Robbie out of that because there has been many times this season he has made important saves at crucial points in games.”

Charlton will look to build on the Southend result when they host basement side Stockport on Saturday.

The Addicks will be strong odds-on favourites with bookies to win the game, although Parkinson has warned his promotion-chasing side against complacency.

He said: “I saw them play Wycombe on Saturday and Tim Breacker saw them play Oldham on Tuesday.

“They are a team you’ve got to respect.

“Often the difference between a top team and a bottom team can be small margins.

It might be a bit of organisation, it might be one moment of quality in the whole game.

“We’ve got to make sure we respect the opposition, which we ultimately always do, and know it will be a difficult game.”

Parkinson will discover tomorrow if Deon Burton (groin) and Jose Semedo (virus) are available for selection for the Stockport game.
