Vickers throw three points away at Maldon

VCD somehow managed to throw away a two goal lead on two occasions in this bizarre match eventually going down 4-3 away to Maldon.

Surging into a 2-0 lead in the first twenty five minutes the Vickers looked to be coasting but paid the price for some mistakes to gift Maldon all three points.

A fine move that cut through Maldon's defence brought the first goal on seventeen minutes as Danny Penny released Nick Hegley who tormented his marker before sending in a low cross which was finished emphatically by a sliding Meshach Nugent.

Only seven minutes later the second goal came from a good period of pressure as Kevin Winchcombe sent in two perfect corners the first of which was headed away for a another corner and this time Leroy Huggins powered home to make it 2-0.

With ten minutes to go in the first half a soft free kick was awarded to Maldon and Tolan stepped up to send the ball into the top left corner with James Tedder helpless to make it 2-1.

Only five minutes into the second half the Vickers were awarded a gift goal as a Tedder punt forward was misjudged and Huggins latched onto the ball to slot home with a deft touch to make it 3-1 and restore the two goal advantage.

With the game seemingly over after and hour a complete turnaround occured with the Vickers on the attack losing possession on the edge of Maldon's box and the ball was sent to the left wing where David Hunt slipped allowing the ball to reach Jeffries who crossed for Plummer to score.

Only three minutes later a run into the box by Plummer was not picked up and he sent a cross to an un-marked Jeffries at the far post who dummied first before firing home from close range.

More drama was to follow with only four minutes to play as Huggins gave the ball away on the halfway line and the ball was sent to the right where Jeffries hit a speculative effort from outside the box that went in at the near post past Tedder.

The Vickers appeared to have done more than enough to record a fine away win but were undone by mistakes to send the Crayford side home wondering how they had lost the match.

VCD Line up J Tedder, Hunt, Barton, Hogg, Cook, Watson, Winchcombe (sub Ibemere 85mins), Penny (sub Maskell 22mins), Huggins (2 goals), Nugent (1 goal sub Firth 75mins), Hegley
