A HEARING to finally resolve the ongoing dispute between Welling and Bishop’s Stortford over Charlie Sheringham’s summer move between the two clubs is expected to take place next month.
Sheringham finished as top scorer with the Wings last season but opted to join Conference South rivals Bishop’s Stortford in the summer, where he has already grabbed 14 goals.
However, Welling have yet to receive any of the compensation they are entitled to because of Sheringham’s young age, a situation described by club owner Barrie Hobbins this morning as simply intolerable.
He said: “I can’t believe a player can play for another club for half a season without a fee being agreed.
“Would this happen if we were talking about someone who used to play for Manchester United and went for nothing? I somehow think not.
“I really am despairing about this now.
“Nobody associated with Welling can believe it.
“I can see why the situation suits Bishop’s Stortford just fine, but that certainly isn’t the case from our point of view.”
Mr Hobbins added: “We were initially asked by the FA if we were available in October and told them yes, but nothing happened.
“Now they’ve asked us if we are available in January. I haven’t had any confirmation of that yet though.”
News Shopper approached the FA for clarification this afternoon to be told both clubs had been contacted this week and they are hopeful a meeting can be arranged early in the new year, although no date has been set.
