WELLING’S super bantamweight boxer Matt Marsh continues his efforts to regain the British title with a warm up fight at Bethnal Green on Friday.

Marsh is set to take on Barking’s Marc Callaghan in a six-round contest at the York Hall as he takes a step closer to taking back the crown he won after failing to meet the weight requirements in a scheduled April defence clash with Mark Moran.

That fight was cancelled and the title relinquished, much to Marsh’s disappointment.

“I was absolutely gutted,” he explained.

“I love the belt and every boxer’s dream is to own it outright by retaining it over three fights. I only had one to go but it was taken from me.”

But in the style of a true professional, Marsh got straight back in the ring in September this year to defeat Josh Wale.

Friday’s clash with Callaghan promises to be a thriller and Marsh is taking his opponent seriously.

“Of course I respect Marc,” said the Welling ace.

“He is a great professional but he’s just a stepping stone for me to get to the British title.”

Both fighters are experienced professionals in very different ways.

Callaghan has clocked up over 36 professional fights since his career began in September 1998.

But for Marsh, this will be only his 14th professional outing since turning pro in 2005.

However, Marsh has already won two southern area titles at different weights, conquered an ex-European champion to attain the British crown and challenged for a world title.

And a date has already been set (February 5) for Marsh to challenge the British champion, Jason Booth for the title he believes belongs to him.

“Of course, the title is mine and I’ll take it back in February next year. I’ll say thanks to Jason for looking after it for me then bring it back to my home in Welling.”
