Millwall arrived at Wheatsheaf Park, home of Blue Square South side Staines Town, without the striking prowess of top scorer Neil Harris and influencial front man Gary Alexander.
The impressive James Henry was also ruled out after parent club Reading refused to give the Lions permission for him to play in the FA Cup.
Many Millwall fans will remember a youngster by the name of Scott Taylor and he was included in the Staines squad against his former club.
The 35-year-old winger is now an electrician and was hoping to put some spark into the Staines attack should he get the chance.
Staines were looking to add another giant killing to their name after seeing off League Two Shrewsbury Town in the first round, while Millwall were hoping to put two disappointing league performances behind them.
It was the League One side who had the early chances as a Steve Morison’s flicked back heel was comfortably saved by Louis Wells, while Jason Price headed wide from the lively Chris Hackett.
Both Millwall forwards then managed to get booked within minutes of each other, as referee Anthony Taylor adjudged the Lions’ forward line of going in a bit too heavy on the home goalkeeper.
Hackett then had a powerful shout tipped over by Wells, forcing one of many early corners for the visitors.
Staines weathered the early pressure and almost took the lead on 20 minutes when Richard Butler was sent through, only to see his effort cleared off the line by Darren Ward.
From the resulting corner a downward header by Marien Ifura was again cleared off the line, this time by Dave Martin, as the home side gathered momentum.
Alan Dunne’s rasping drive was again tipped over by the impressive Wells, while at the other end Ali Chaaban should have done better when sent clean through, only for David Forde to save superbly.
Andy Frampton was forced off with a hand injury just before half-time and replaced by Jack Smith as the teams went into the break all square.
There was no let up on the chances front in the second half, as Morsion somehow managed to miss a Hackett cross with the goal at his mercy.
Price and Morison were replaced with Lewis Grabban and Ashley Grimes as the Lions went in search of the opener.
Millwall finally made the breakthrough on 70 minutes when skipper Paul Robinson’s looping header from a corner was totally misjudged by Wells, much to the delight of the 700 travelling away fans.
Kenny Jackett’s side looked in control and not even Staines’ most fan, Russell Grant, would have predicted the harsh penalty which followed for the home side when Richard Butler went over very easily in the box.
This left former Bromley player Chaaban to do the rest and send Forde the wrong way to earn Staines a trip to The Den for the replay on Tuesday week.
Millwall: Forde, Dunne, Frampton (Smith 32), Robinson, Ward, Laird, Abdou, Hackett, Martin, Price (Grabban 46), Morison (Grimes 67). Subs not used: Sullivan, Bolder, Schofield, Fuseini.
