Royals striker may stay at Valley

PHIL Parkinson has denied speculation linking him with a January move for highly-rated Luton Town midfielder Keith Keane, but admitted there is a chance on-loan Reading striker David Mooney may stay for a bit longer.

The Addicks boss revealed he had been to watch the Hatters, but denied 22-year-old Keane was a potential target once the January transfer window opens.

“We’ve had Luton watched several times this season, but not specifically to watch Keith Keane,” Parkinson said.

However, the manager dropped a strong hint on-loan Reading striker David Mooney may extend his spell in SE7, which is due to end on December 1.

Parky said: “Of course there is an opportunity and it is something we are going to address next week.

“Ideally you always want to add to the squad and I’m no different from any other manager.

“But finances dictate things to quite a degree, so if we have to go down the loan market because of finances, then that is what we’re going to have to do.

“We’ve said all along we would like to sign our own players and have them contracted to us, but if that isn’t possible, the next option is the loan market.”

The arrival of Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme on loan while Rob Elliot is out injured has led some fans to openly question Parkinson’s judgement after Darren Randolph’s impressive display in the shock FA Cup defeat against Northwich.

But the boss says he is there to take tough decisions and denied Wolves had put pressure of Charlton to make sure their man got the nod.

“None whatsoever,” responded Parkinson when asked.

“All I can say is I’ve got to make a decision. I’ve made that and you’ve got to stand by it. Darren’s attitude has been first class and I can’t praise him enough for that.

“I understand he is frustrated but I can only make the call on what I see from each game.”
