BEXLEYHEATH & Belvedere Hockey Club travelled to Holcombe for a much-anticipated league encounter, befitting two teams with strong ambitions to progress for honours in the Kent & Sussex Regional Division.
Visitors BBHC made the stronger start, as Jamie Perfitt combined well with Dave Humber to force a smart save out of the keeper.
Dan Lucas was also denied a goal with his shot blazing millimetres wide of Holcombe’s goal.
It was BB’s keeper Lee Cook who was left to thwart the Holcombe attacks as the home team started to exert extended pressure on the BB defence.
Half-time saw the scores level at 0-0 with all to play for in the second half.
Within 10 minutes of the restart, BB found themselves in front courtesy of James Baldwin’s deflected shot.
This should have been the start of things to come as BBHC looked to build on their lead.
However, it was Holcombe who stepped up a gear and equalised within five minutes, scoring from a drag flick at a penalty corner.
BB’s cause was not helped when Neil Barr was harshly sent off with a yellow card.
This gave Holcombe the extra impetus they needed and somewhat fortuitously they grabbed the winner following an attacking foray into the BB circle.
BBHC struggled to find the equaliser and Holcombe, buoyed by their home support, ran the clock down to record a 2-1 win.
On reflection, BB felt they deserved much more from a game that they controlled for the majority.
Special mention goes to the midfield trio of Ashenden, Horsman and Baldwin, all of whom had good games.
