LIAM Daish was unable to put one over his former club last night as Cambridge United emerged victorious at Stonebridge Road.

The game started at a blistering pace with five good chances inside the opening 10 minutes.

Ishmael Welsh was looking very dangerous on the left wing for Ebbsfleet, as his pace and turn had the Cambridge defenders on the back foot.

Ricky Shakes should have done better on four minutes when, clean through, he drilled his shot wide, while Magno Vieira had a dazzling run and shot but saw the effort go agonisingly across the face of the goal.

Cambridge took the lead with their first real threatening move of the game on 15 minutes.

A quick free kick by Wayne Hatwell was put behind but from the resulting corner, Hatwell headed back across goal and Paul Carden cut back for Chris Holroyd to cheekily back heel the visitors in front.

A flurry of corners at both ends ensured the half didn’t completely fall flat after such a hectic opening, with Fleet’s Magno Vieira missing a gilt-edged header minutes before the break.

The second half started just as brightly as the first, as Ebbsfleet drew level after just two minutes when a free-kick from Scott Shulton was powerfully headed home by Leon Crooks.

But Cambridge restored thier lead almost immediately when a good move and cross down the left was cut back by Robbie Wilmott and Jai Reason had the easy task of poking home.

Cambridge dominated the next 20 minutes and were rewarded when Wilmott’s precise cross was headed home by Holroyd for his second of the evening.

Even with seven minutes of injury time added on, the visitors held on for a deserved win to leave Fleet still looking for their first victory of the season.
