ORPINGTON Sharks has been awarded a grant of £600 from the Foresters’ Fund for Children.
The club is a branch of Special Olympics GB, which provides swimming training and competition for people with learning disabilities.
Foresters’ Fund for Children is a charity which issues small grants in support of activities which support children and young people.
The grant will be used by the Sharks to help finance their participation in the Special Olympics GB Games in Leicester this month, a week-long competition with 3,000 athletes from 19 regions competing in 20 different sports.
The opening ceremony will take place at Leicester City FC’s Walker’s Stadium and will include the lighting of the Olympic torch.
Chairman of the Foresters’ Fund Tom Ball, said, “The trustees are so pleased to have been able to support the Sharks in this valuable work they are doing.
“The Fund receives many applications for grants through its website.
“We try to ensure grant money goes to where it can be best used and we believe in awarding this grant to the Orpington Sharks, a positive contribution is being made to the welfare and wellbeing of children and young people in the community.
“Our aim is to support projects and causes that struggle to receive funds from elsewhere, but who we believe provide valuable benefit to children and in this case children and young people with learning disabilities.”
The Sharks are training hard for the Games and looking forward to the chance of bringing home some medals.
Regular training helps increase their fitness levels and competing in galas around the country throughout the year helps build team spirit and improves confidence and self-esteem.
The week away from home will help the club’s swimmers further develop their independence skills and grow in maturity, while at the same time having a fun week away with friends, enjoying the sport they love.
