Peterborough let early lead slip against Exiles

12:20pm Monday 6th July 2009

KENT Exiles travelled to RAF Alconbury and spoiled Peterborough Saxons’ July 4 celebrations with a convincing victory.

Playing on the immaculate Alconbury pitch, the Saxons got off to a dream start with a long drive ending in Ronnie Foster finding Dervan Alleyne with a pass from seven yards out.

Nick Kay kicked the point after for a 7-0 lead.

Following this somewhat surprising start, Kent Exiles started to stamp some authority on the game, immediately replying with a 44 yard pass from Aaron Griffiths to Sean Starwind, which set up Stewart Muir's two yard burst into the endzone.

With regular kicker Richard McHugh unavailable, Starwind stepped up and his low kick was blocked.

With the Saxons’ next drive faltering, Kent Exiles drove downfield once again and Muir found the endzone for the second time, this time from one yard out.

The two point conversion was stopped short of scoring, but the Exiles now held a 12-7 advantage, a lead which was not to be relinquished.

Kent Exiles rounded off the half with a 12 yard pass from Griffiths to Harry Innis and this time Starwind converted the point.

Taking the ball in the second half, the Exiles continued to threaten the Peterborough goal, but after reaching the three yard line, a string of penalties forced Starwind to take the field to convert a 27 yard field goal.

Tackles from Marlon Smith, who was to lead the team with 10 on the day, and a Kerry Gray sack ended the Saxons’ next drive and Griffiths then helped Starwind round off a great day (seven catches for 151 yards) with a 27 yard pass for the touchdown.

Now using the full rotation of their squad, the Exiles scored again when Starwind kicked a 38 yard field goal before the Saxons scored late on with a 54 yard pass from Foster to Aaron Gepp.

With five wins and two losses to date this season, Kent Exiles face a tough road trip to the Ipswich Cardinals this weekend in a game which will show if their play-off aspirations have some foundation.

The fast improving Cardinals were beaten by the Exiles in the season’s opening game, but have improved greatly and are on a late season run for the play-offs.
