WELLING United have signed Spencer Knight after he was released by Chelmsford City.
The versatile 31-year-old can play in several positions and manager Andy Ford is hoping his experience will prove to be a major asset next year.
He said: “Spencer gives us options because he can play either at left-back or in midfield.
“Spencer is someone Lee Protheroe knows quite well and he was keen to sign him.”
Welling fans are up in arms over the controversial departure of Tony Sinclair to link up with former assistant boss Jimmy Dack at Woking.
Woking have also signed Harry Arter from Charlton after the player impressed while on loan at Park View Road last season and the double swoop has provoked a furious response from supporters.
However, Ford gave a considered approach when asked for his reaction to the news.
He explained: “Tony Sinclair always said he wanted full-time football and I was never in a position to give it to him.
“Of course I wanted to keep him and I did make what I consider to be a good offer.
“That is all I’m prepared to say about his situation for now.
“Harry Arter also wanted full-time football and that is hardly surprising bearing in mind he was coming out of Charlton.
“I thought he was joining AFC Wimbledon but I was never in a position to sign him.
“Obviously Jimmy knows he is a very good player, so it really is no surprise.”
Meanwhile, Sonny Cobbs has joined Sutton United after only being offered pre-season training by the Wings.
“I’m pleased he has got a club but a bit surprised he has stepped down a level,” added Ford.
